Breakfast In the Park
This week, the Thorn’s were kind enough to host Family Home Evening. It was a beautiful drive out to their house which is about 35 minutes west of Albany. Their home sits on a hill overlooking the bay and the view is breathtaking. It was such a special night as Brother Thorn gave his son the most incredible blessing we have ever heard as he set him apart as a Teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood. We were very blessed to be a part of this special moment. We had a great time eating, playing games, and socializing.
We have volunteered to help with the community Breakfast in the Park, which is a service put on by the Albany & Regional Volunteer Services to provide breakfast for those in need in the community. We met at the park at 6:30 a.m. and cooked about 40 “Toasties” (see Australia tidbits at the end to see what a toastie is). It was great to serve and be able to bring blessings into other people’s lives. It was humbling to see how blessed we are. We are excited to be able to volunteer at this event every week.
We had our first Member Leader Support Team meeting this week hosted by President and Sister Wi Repa. It was great to get together with everyone (through zoom) and see all the different ways our team is serving. President and Sister Wi Repa are great leaders and love the missionaries so much. We have zone conference training in Perth this coming week and are excited for the training we will receive there and the opportunity to get together in person with the other missionaries. Following our zoom meeting we took the Elders for a drive around the town to see some of the different cultural sites.
I found the best fabric shop that I have seen in a long time. Wish my quilting buddies were here to see this one. It sure made me happy even though I didn't buy anything! It's hard to believe that I will not be quilting for over a year.
Thursday, we attended the Family History class. Dave researched some of his ancestors and read some of their stories. He is looking forward to learning more and reading many more stories.
We had several opportunities to go with the Elders this week as they taught some of our friends. We were able to go to Mount Barker and teach one of our friends at the park. It was a picturesque setting, and after some persuasion, Dave boarded the only boat he probably would not get sick on.
Upon departing from another friend's house, we observed significant smoke across the street and detected a fire within the trees. We were glad to see fire personnel arrive quickly and put it out. It was kind of ironic to see the park sprinklers on across the street from the fire.
It has been great this week to be able to visit with lots of members in their homes and learn about them and hear their stories. It has also been fun to share the different food we have in America. Over the past month we have introduced our Australia friends to Dixie Salad (pomegranate salad), Dutch oven potatoes, Fruit pizza, Gnocchi soup in bread bowls, and Chicken Salad sandwiches.
We love our time here in Albany and hope we can be of service to those around us.
Tidbits from Australia
Grilled sandwiches (like grilled cheese) are called Toasties
Green Peppers are called Capsicums
Cheddar Cheese is white
Mailmen are called Posties
Ground beef is called Minced meat
A soft drink with ice cream (ie a Root beer float) is called a Spider drink. Australians named it this because once the carbonation hits the ice cream it forms a spider web-like reaction. Australia doesn't have root beer, but we'll check if Costco in Perth sells it since it's an American store. Australia has sarsaparilla which is like Root beer but not quite the same. We wish we had McCormick Root beer extract and dry ice to make homemade Root beer.
Most grocery stores are inside malls. Grocery stores do not have medicine. Medicine is sold at the Chemist.
Convenience stores that sell gas are called Roadhouses
